come back around
May. 3rd, 2009 01:14 amOKAY SO. Apparently I have a whole ton of people friended/subscribing/whatever you call it here that I don't on LJ and whom I possibly don't actually know at all, so perhaps I will crosspost after all while I'm getting myself sorted. I don't want to import my LJ, because there's five back years of teenage fail in there, but here's the short version:
I'm 21-- was born in NYC, grew up near Philadelphia, and currently live in Chicago with a lab tech, a math professor, and a giant orange cat. I was taking British history at U Chicago but hated it, dropped out, and am currently working for an online shoe store and looking into being an illustration major (and stage design minor) at an art school downtown.
I have no real specific fandoms any more, but the list of things I would love to read and/or write fic for is vast, and I love a good crossover-- I've got three separate ones on the brain right now. I get pretty OTP-ish and defensive about pairings, but I'll fall in love with a character or canon at the drop of a hat. As a general rule I like fictional(ized) newspapers, cyborgs, women who play with machinery, YA, non-comics-based superheroes, crime novels, and all kinds of cheesy ridiculousness. (My most recent addictions are Life, the BBC State of Play, Lost, A Series of Unfortunate Events, and Zac Efron. If that helps.)
Tell me about yourselves :D? Even the socks and lurkers, if y'like, I'm curious who I'm talking to here. I'd offer lemonade but that doesn't work so well over the Internet.

Date: 2009-05-03 03:30 pm (UTC)Hi! I'm Lindsey. :) I would say that I'm a sophomore at a small college in Ohio, but school's almost out for the summer so that'll be moot by Thursday. I'm an English / Classics major. While I don't really participate in fandoms, I seem to have a new obsession every six months. Right now it's Watchmen.
Anyway, it's nice to meet you.

Date: 2009-05-03 07:34 pm (UTC)So you're a junior, sort of! Hooray \o/ U Chicago is on quarters and gets out in mid-June, so I always get so weirded out that most places are done more than a month before that.

Date: 2009-05-03 03:31 pm (UTC)Anyway! Hi, I'm eighteen, I go to college in rural Ohio but I'm from the Seattle area. Um... I fucking love Zac Efron. :D:

Date: 2009-05-03 06:59 pm (UTC)I dunno, that makes sense to me. Sometimes I consider privating all my LJ entries from before I started college, because boy was I annoying back then. Like a fresh start without actually losing anything permanently.

Date: 2009-05-03 09:12 pm (UTC)I'm a lurker by nature, but I've been trying to get out more and actually comment on other people's journals, though I fail to do so sometimes for months at a time. And I love your default icon, btw.

Date: 2009-05-03 09:51 pm (UTC)I know what you mean about being suggestible-- my list of shows to watch is a mile long. The last thing I finished, over two years ago, was due South/House of Leaves crossover, and what I'm writing now is Hairspray/A Series of Unfortunate Events, so . . . yeah. I'm writing things far more ridiculous than Leverage or HSM, though I'd love to know what you're up to with them :D?
Aw, thanks :O I did a Magnificent Mile picspam on my LJ a few weeks ago, and most of my photos were pretty mediocre but I really liked that one, so I kept it around.

Date: 2009-05-04 04:10 am (UTC)Finishing things is hard. My Leverage stuff is always terrible gooey team gen drabbles that I delete and rewrite at will, and my HSM fic is Sharpay/Zeke/Ryan smut that keeps wanting to grow a plot in my mind without actually letting me finish the smut part. >:/ Not even good plot. I'm shunning it at the moment until this stops. And crossovers! I love almost all crossovers. I've been trying to bend my mind around a Jeeves&Wooster/Watchmen crossover in Bertie's point of view, with the Minutemen, but the strain has so far been too great, and all things considered that may be for the best.

Date: 2009-05-04 04:48 am (UTC)Finishing things is hard. Though I have the opposite problem-- I've been plugging away at this same longfic for ages and ages and I wish it would just get finished and be awesome already :( I would totally love some Sharpay/Zeke/Ryan, though, and I hope you finish it sometime. And I can't wrap my mind around a Wodehouse/Watchmen crossover either, but I officially declare you awesome and brilliant for thinking it up to begin with. :DDDDDDDDDDDDDD
You should come hang out with me and my IRL/IRLJ friend Esther, who writes Band of Brothers fic where they all have animal daemons. Crossover party! \o/

Date: 2009-05-03 10:24 pm (UTC)I'm a lurker too, but I'm hoping to get back into fandoms for the stuff I like. I'm still in love with Watchmen (and Laurie!), but most of my fandoms are for the ladyslash and/or because they make me laugh.

Date: 2009-05-03 11:27 pm (UTC)Congratulations to your social life, and hooray for history majors-- what are you specializing in?

Date: 2009-05-04 05:16 pm (UTC)Being as I have academic ADHD, I'm kinda split between immigration history (predominantly the Irish when they showed up in the 1800's and 1850's and promptly formed gangs and wrecked shit up and had shanty towns), WWI (;____; most tragic war ever), and the Space Race. Just thinking about having to narrow my interests down to write a thesis is giving me a headache. Also, I do not blame you for dropping British history.

Date: 2009-05-04 02:18 am (UTC)Other than that, I'm 23 and working on finishing my undergrad degree (eventually), which is caught between English and Fine Arts at the moment. And, well, I've been terminally preoccupied with that lately, so I've been kind of boring. :( I'm looking forward to summer.

Date: 2009-05-04 04:59 am (UTC)Everyone should like Zac Efron! He's a sweetheart.
I know what you mean about degrees taking forever :( If I restart at Columbia now I'd be getting my bachelor's when I'm 26. My roommate's that old and he's defending his doctorate D: But man, the time off has been so nice, and it'll feel so good when it's done, won't it?

Date: 2009-05-09 05:53 am (UTC)That college sounds like a good fit then! It's also good that you can get guidance from your mom; that's my problem right now, is that I'm sort of floundering around without someone to help point me in the right direction. College stuff is confusing. :/
Wow, that is... really young to be defending his doctorate. I can't even imagine. Oh well, I kind of enjoy not feeling as rushed about it. I've taken a lot of good classes just because I wanted to, without worrying about credits I needed, and there's something to be said for getting the chance to explore.
Re: favorite fictional detectives--well, Agent Pendergast from the Preston and Child books is my big love. I've also read all the Sherlock Holmes stories and enjoyed them. During the phase where I went around reading all my dad's paperback thrillers, I read one Lincoln Rhyme novel, and it was probably the best-written of the bunch that I read. And I've been meaning to read some Nero Wolfe...one of these days, when I get the time. :/

Date: 2009-05-11 12:17 am (UTC)Oh my gosh, I love Lincoln Rhyme, and you should totally read more of those! Lincoln and Amelia are fantastic, and they're all so well-researched and creepy. My mom is a giant Anglophile and infected me, so my favorites are Lord Peter Wimsey and Albert Campion. Ooh, and Inspector Rebus, and everyone Agatha Christie ever thought up-- her stories were a bit meh sometimes but her detectives were great.
and I forgot to ask:

Date: 2009-05-04 11:18 am (UTC)Not much to say about me. I'm 23, Australian, work full-time, live with my mum and sister, and am quadcatular. I go through fandoms pretty frequently but I love talking about any and all of them at any given time.
Isn't State of Play fantastic? om nom nom tightly-woven political thriller :9 I hope the film does it justice.

Date: 2009-05-11 12:37 am (UTC)Sadly the film failed pretty hard; see here. I plan to buy the miniseries on DVD and forget the movie ever happened.
