If it helps, I have no experience with pre-film Star Trek fandom, but my general impression (I haven't been seeking out the actual fandom, but I have been happily reading the fic and my flist has been reporting re: the fandom) is that there are definitely some people who are being nitpicky and some people who are going "GET OFF MY LAWN, YOU DAMN KIDS" to anyone who wants to do fannish things about the movie, but in the main the old schoolers are thrilled about the revitalization of the fandom and it is all one big outpouring of love. So I'd say, go at that fandom!
